I have answered this question so many times, I decided to dedicate a web site to answer this question. Here it is:

http://www.life-after-harry-potter.com

Included is a list of only the best sorcery fantasy books, grade reading level, a short review of each book along with a brief summary of adult content. There is also a "Reader's Choice" list of favorite books, and a list of heroine sorcery fantasy books.

I hope this helps.

I just got a copy of Something wicked this way comes, it's seriously amazing. I could hook even a kid in, but it's got enough depth to reel someone grown in and keep them there, it's definitely one of the best i've read. I dont know what he's into, but it's kind of magical, it's about a dark carnival coming to town but it's a disney movie, so no worries :]

Philip Pullman, Hid Dark Materials. The film is coming, too.

And I like the Sally Lockhardt trilogy.

Good prose, fast pace and interesting speculations.

Try "Titus Groan" and "Gormenghast" by Mervyn Peake. I was disappointed in the third book, "Titus Alone." You might beable to get cheap paperbacks on amazon.com or alibris.com

Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card is sci-fi, not fantasy, but every kid I know in that age group has loved it.
