I actually tend to downplay things rather than exaggerate them but I have a number of friends who are masters at over exaggerating.

Yes we all do, it may not be done to be deceitful but we all want to jazz up a story or get the desired dramatic reaction from someone - so we'll exaggerate to an extent to get it.
