I live in Illinois and I voted Democrat in the last Primaries. This time, I want to vote Republican. Do I need to officially register as a Republican to be able to vote that way in the Primaries, or do I just tell them when I go to vote?

No - just ask for a Republican ballot when you go to vote.

At one time it was more complicated because they wanted to prevent people from crossing over just to vote for the worst candidate in the opposing party, but they did away with that restriction some years ago.

When you come in they will ask Republican or Democrat. They will then give you the asked for ballot.
