Climatology is a specialty profession that can be entered in a few ways, either through a general meteorology degree or through a degree in chemistry with an emphasis on aerosol chemistry (studying atmospheric composition and the effects of particulate matter on weather conditions). The amount you make depends on exactly what you do with it, but unless you publish a bestselling book or get a lot of TV time, you probably won't get rich doing it. I have doubts about how far you'd go with an online degree in meteorology or chemistry, if you were even able to get one from a bona fide ACE certified college, because you wouldn't have any lab experience or hands-on work. Most of what a climatologist does is compile data from other studies and historical records, so you won't necessarily do a lot of travelling, but you might if your research warrants it and you can get someone to pay for it (in most fields of study -- not just climatology -- the amount of work you're able to do depends on how much grant money you can convince someone to pony up, which is directly proportional to: 1. how important your research sounds, and 2. how good a salesperson you are). And unless your research has at least some preliminary results that tell you something startling or affects people on a global scale, you're probably not going to get noticed or famous outside of the weather community. Sorry, but there are far, far easier ways to get rich and famous, but it is still a worthy field to enter, if you're up for it.

I'm not sure you're really serious, but I'll pretend that you are and try to answer your questions. First, you really need to have a Ph.D. to get a decent job in climatology. Most people with technical doctorates make good money, so you would probably make from $60,000--150,000/yr. Groupies? Maybe a few, these days, but you'll have more luck being a rock star or writer. The closest you could get to an online degree was a master's in atmospheric science from the University of North Dakota, but I don't believe they are offering that anymore. You certainly would have the opportunity to travel to exotic places, and if you become an expert on global warming you might end up on television or the radio. More likely you will be giving speeches to your local garden club.
