Flowers are nice. But really one the first date you do not have to give a gift. Just spend time getting to know each other. And then if you keep dating give flowers, and other gifts. But by all means do not give jewelery. That is to much to soon for the first date.

Flowers.
It's cheap but pretty, leaving you flattered and not feeling like you should have gotten your date something, too. Besides, allergics have a hard time with perfume and it's risky if you don't know the preferences of the lady in question. And in an anorectic/overweight world like this, chocolate may hint something rude. Plus, if the date goes horribly wrong, flowers are easily removed.

I'd prefer flowers rather than chocolates, jewelry, perfume or something else. Perfume and jewelry are too personal for a first date. Flowers are always romantic!
