Recently I've been given reason to believe that a very unpleasant individual is tracking my IP address. I do not know this for sure, because it could simply be a monumental coincidence, but it seems a bit suspicious that this person ,or very similar people, has somehow managed to find me at various unrelated forums that I frequent. Is there a way in which I can find out if my suspicions are true, and then, how best can I protect myself?

With out that person putting something on your PC or has access to your ISP or internal network he has no way of "tracking" you.

Just to make things more clear based on other peoples answers you should have a router anyway but you are never that far from one in any situation. So if you "dont" then your ISP does and unless that person is under your ISP, locally, then he will not be able to see you even with a sniffer. And most credible ISPs will shut down sniffers if found on a network.

In computers, everything is possible, though not always probable. Need more info to accurately assess but:
Get spybot S&D, download it for free here:http://www.safer-networking.org/
install it and run it to make sure that you do not have a key stroke logger running on your computer.

Make sure you are running a firewall, not the windows firewall, it is worthless. Norton or McAfee are good.

Consider that someone is actually using your computer when you are not there and gaining access to this information. Change your password.

If you are using the same or similar login information at these forums, change them. If someone gets your login name, just by doing a Google/Yahoo/etc search, they can find your name on the net.

Do your own internet search for your login info and see if the results show you in these forums.

Most IP addresses are dynamic and change regularly and it would be very cumbersome to search for you in forums via your IP address.

Hope this helps.

Yes someone can track your IP address however it sounds to me if they are ending up in the same forums as you all the time then maybe they have you clicked on Follow User so that it automatically directs them to each spot you visit.

Well I don't know how/ if they are tracking you but I have software on my blog page that captures what page you enter from, exit to IP address, ect. The program is called "MyBlogLog" Might want to see if you are signed up to that or similar programs.
