I am a 41 year-old woman in good health and not overweight. My thyroid function is normal. I went off the pill over a year ago, and it took a good four or five months for my period to return to normal. Lately, I've been getting my period every other month (last two periods). I've read that ovaries take turns ovulating each month, which might imply one of my ovaries isn't functioning properly. What are some of the reason for this? I just got my period today (after about 50 days). The weird thing is that a month ago, when I was supposed to get my period, it did seem like I was ovulating, but the period never came.

I also realize I could be perimenopausal, but no one else in my family ever had this kind of issue at this age (and I've heard that menopause symptoms are somewhat familial).

I do have an appointment to see the doctor next week but am just feeling a bit anxious and am wondering if anyone has some insights.

you are probably in the early stages of menopause...my mom went through this...she would get a period one month and then not get one for three months or so...

It's hard to determine (although there's a few guesses) without LH and FSH lab values and really, a complete history.

All the things you said sound sane. Are your periods heavier now? You could have a cyst on your ovaries (I have polycystic ovarian syndrome myself).

I wouldn't fuss over it too much. I know everyone thinks worst case scenario at first, but do expect to get blood drawn when you go to the doctor.

well my mom is currently in active menopause and let me tell you for her thats how it started....her periods became very irregualr until they just stopped.....she hasnt had a period in over a year now and it suddenly came again this month....

i really wouldnt compare your menopause with those of your family because it affects every woman differently...its not a genetic thing.....if i were you i wouldnt worry...its normal for us women to worry about little changes that our body goes through but sometimes its just not necessary....

the doctors visit really should help with your anxiety and i hope everything turns out fine

honestly, i wouldn't worry about it. this has been happening with me since i was about 38. i'm now 47 and it still happens. it's just your body changing. just b/c no one else in your family has dealt with peri menopausal symptoms this way doesn't mean you won't. many times, women in the same family will have similar symptoms but not always.
