which includes the gas gauge and battery etc. did it short out or maybe the wires loose...about how much would it cost to have checked and repaired

For $20 you can get a Chiltons, Clymers or Haynes manual for that car from Autozone, Advance Auto, etc. Get one that has the wiring diagrams in it. Look at the diagram for the dash and see the common point for all of the dash items that are not working.
It is from that point outward from the dash that there is a problem.
It is probably a plug pulled out, or blown fuse, or wire cut by some hack installing stereo or similar. The manual will pay for itself every time you work on the car.

IT DOESN'T WORK AS IN LIGHTING OR NON FUNCTIONING GAUGES ????
LIGHTING YOU WILL JUST NEED TO REPLACE THE BULBS THAT ARE ON BEHIND THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER AND YOU CAN DO THIS YOURSELF JUST REMEMBER TO DISCONNECT THE BATTERY.
GAUGE OPERATION COULD BE A LOOSE CONNECTION ON THE BACKSIDE OF THE PRINTED CIRCUIT BOARD AND YOU CAN DO THIS YOURSELF JUST REMEMBER TO DISCONNECT THE BATTERY.
