NFL players play in packed stadiums and are watched on TV all over the US, so they make millions of dollars. Union players play in packed stadiums and are watched TV all over the world, but they have to get side jobs to make ends meet?! Who gets the money?

It goes to the IRB and they put it in their pockets. You are totally right about the amount of money thats out there BUT rugby also has a much larger set of expenses than the NFL. They are trying to fund and grow the game in countries all around the world whereas the NFL has the money going back into it's 30 or so teams.

The IRB is supposedly funding rugby programs all over the world but from what I know, they have divided the responsibilities up to the major unions. NZ looks after a number of Pacific Island countries and I am sure the home nations have similar deals with smaller European teams like Romania etc.

If the IRB opened up the wallet instead of just stuffing it for their retirement funds, Rugby could get established in every country in the world and eventually kick that fruity soccer game out of #1... but that would also require the teams to stop playing the boring style of RWC rugby.

Because Rugby has only become professional in the last 20 years or so, the dynamics are different. I suggest professionals are a much smaller percentage of the total playing population, than NFL. Yet things like pitches, equipment, and coaching still need to be paid for. It is very likely that while in NFL much of the money you speak of goes to players, in Rugby it goes to these fundamental items, making it cheaper for the amateur to play.

Union players are not amateur any more. They get paid - the same as NFL etc.
