you definitely need a sewing machine. some lessons on the sewing machine if you have never used one will go a long way. start with patterns for simple things like pillows, drawstring bags for any use or reason, simple rod pocket curtains for smaller windows, like the toilet or laundry, useful wallhangings with pockets to hold things in every room in the house, even the shed. then when you are confident to sew clothing items, start with very simple items with not much shaping in them. look at the item and see what the actual shape looks like. another alternative is to ask at the fabric store to help you find an easy pattern for beginners, and get everything you need from the one place. study the pattern first before you open up the pieces or cut anything. once you understand the concept of how the pieces go together and in what order, start to pin your pattern pieces on the fabric then cut and follow pattern instructions. don't leave any step out. you will understand why when you have been sewing for a while and become competent at it. So have fun and ask questions of anyone you know that sews or ask at the fabric store. soon you will be making costumes for others when they find out you made your own

First get a sewing machine. If you have an old one, get it cleaned and tuned. Buy a copy of "sewing for dummies" and some of their patterns, available in fabric stores. After you make a few easy patterns, you can buy harder patterns that are similar to the cosplay outfits and start modifying them. Make sure you look in the costume section of the pattern books in the fabric store. Costumes tend to be easier to make.
