.. we should keep them here for the benefit of all mankind now and in the future.
It's well known that muslims do not value art or history unless it's directly related to Muhammed and his dreaming.
In Afghanistan the ancient and wonderful giant buddhas were blown up by the muslims because they were considered sacriligeous.
It's only a question of time before the muslim brotherhood or their compatriotes in Egypt destroys King Tuts treasures.
History will judge us as saviours if we keep Tuts treasures here where they can be better looked after.

Ha, ha, ha.

What a lovely imperialist thought.

I could go on for an eternity about this - but just a few brief responses.

There were (and are) radical Christians, just as there are extremists in any religion that are just as culpable in the destruction of art - for instance, the sack of Byzantium, the Puritan movement and the iconoclasts.

The Egyptian monuments were created for the benefit of the Egyptian hierarchy in accordance with Egyptian religion of the time - what has given us (by which I mean westerners) the right to desecrate their graves and take anything from them?

Artefacts belong to the country that originated them and no-one else. If we are genuinely concerned about their proper preservation for posterity, then we need to put our money where our mouth is and assist these countries - not try to steal their heritage. This has happened in Venice, is happening in Egypt and in numerous other locations.

Now - don't get me started on the so-called Elgin Marbles!!

What a load of rubbish!!!!

Have you ever been to Turkey and seen Ephuses or many of their Roman ruins? The underwater archaeology museam in Bodrum? They are well looked after and a pleasure to walk round.

Same for Tunisia, Morocco and many other Muslim states. Any country can lose artifacts at times of war and disorder, whether they are muslim or otherwise.

Poverty is the main reason for artifacts not to be seen as important - they do not have the money to look after them when the living need the money more.

These items belong to their country of origin and should be returned to Egypt, but should be allowed out of the country to various museams around the world from time to time - as they are doing at the moment.

You need to travel more and maybe get off Yahoo Answers and get a real life!

These items are normally housed in the museum in Cairo. They are very well looked after and generate large amount of foreign currency which Egypt badly needs. You do have terrorist activity in Egypt which tries to disrupt the tourist trade but the Egyptians on the whole control it quite well. And they should because the tourist trade is vital for their economy. The terrorists may have high minded religious ideas but usually it is the economic demands that win out in the end so I think Tutankhamen's relics are as safe in Egypt where they belong as anywhere.

As much as keeping Tutankhamen's treasures would undoubtedly benefit the attendance figures at the British Museum, the likelihood of future exhibits coming to this country would be zero.
The other problem would be the massive diplomatic disagreement this would cause, especially considering Egypt is one of the more moderate Muslim states.

The English may have discovered the tomb. But they also desecrated a lot of its treasures Tut was hacked apart to get at the amulets inside. Egypt tries very hard with very little help to keep its treasures in the environment that is needed. We as a world could help them more. I think all items should be returned.

You certainly have a point, and let's face it, if it hadn't been for Westerners, Ancient Egypt would never have been uncovered. But I think your 'only a matter of time' is too pessimistic. Not every Egyptian or every muslim is a fanatic.

I don't know how to answer this question.
The treasures should be taken back to Egypt and left in peace. However, you are right about the Muslims not respecting art or history.

I have seen them in Cairo museum, they are as safe there as anywhere. How on earth could we possibly justify 'stealing' them?
