Well, it sure did scare people back in 1978.
The new horror movies give us a new perspective on whats
scary now adays, and what isn't scary.
All the new horror movies seem scarier than Halloween, when Halloween was terrifying in the 70's.
I'm a big fan of the Halloween movie, i saw it, and i was kind of like "This is it??"
then i thought about it, watched it again, and realized its much better than i thought it was.
So, blame horror movies nowadays.
Some parts made me jump while watching the original Halloween movie.

halloween was originally rated 18. Think about the movies around now that get a 15 rating....sometimes you've got to ask 'what does it take for a movie to get an 18 these days?' Halloween, The Exorcist, Omen etc were a perfect product of the era. Think about the TV shows of the 70s and then think about what's on TV these days. We are exposed to horror every single day now. We are jaded. Those films came along and captured the mood of the moment, nothing like them had ever been seen before, even although today, they are laughable. I think that says more about what we are currently exposed to than the actual quality of those movies.

It's famous and overrated because it deserves it... Halloween marked a hit im moviemaking because of its simplicity... it played with great fears (girls left alone to babysit), and used conventional methods for scaring people... have u noticed a lot of objects in the movie are white? just like the mask of Michael Myers... the music is very simple and made by the director... I don't know why but everytime this happens, the movie is scarier... think The Others by Alejandro Amenabar...
It was also the first slasher film after psycho to use violence on screen...

I think it's a little over-rated, but c'mon. It's not bad.
What I think is really going on here is you are very young, used to gore and slasher films piled high with effects that leave nothing to the imagination, and that measured against this, Halloween seems too tame.
Do you watch any classic horror from the 30s - '60s? I think your issues with Halloween are generational, and the narrow experience and rash judgment of youth speaking. Honestly. No offense.

They are all like that. And that is because most of the human race has no taste whatsoever. I was totally disappointed. Want to watch a scary movie? Try The Haunting, the original with Julie Harris.

Probably for the same reasons that old Alfred Hitchcock films terrified people back in the day, when it came out it was innovative and provocative by the standards set back then. Now we're so desensitized that old classics are really lost on this generation.

It was quite the flick when it came out... freaked people out back then. Also Jaws had the same effect. Now we watch it an it looks like lousy theme park scare ride
