As it is faulty.... and you don't have a receipt...you can either:

(a) exchange it for another one; or

(b) return it and they will give you a credit note or vouchers of the same value as the dress

If it is faulty and is clearly a manufacturing fault, you do not need a receipt and any reputable retailer should offer you your money back with or without a receipt, under your statutory rights, as they have sold you something which is not fit for the purpose for which it was intended. The one consideration would be how long ago you bought the dress, if it was some time ago they may have an opt out clause and offer you an exchange or a credit note instead. Take it back and stand your ground. Good luck.

If it's faulty you don't need proof of purchase. They don't have to give you cash though, credit note or exchange as you say, will be what they will do. It doesn't matter if you've worn it, if it's not fit for the purpose of which it was sold, they have to offer an alternative, unless the faultiness is due to normal wear and tear, which it wouldn't be after one wear.

You can visit the trading standards website for ammunition to take to the shop if you think they might try and get out of their obligations. They have loads of info on consumer rights.

If the fault was obviously there when you bought it you might stand a chance of getting an exchange but without the receipt you'll probably get nothing.
if it is a chain brand item - eg George, or Next, so was obviously bought there and nowhere else you might get lucky, but the problem then would be proving WHEN you bought it.
If the item is still in stock you might get an exchange if the fault is obviously there all the time, otherwise you'll be lucky to get a credit note.
you could try phoning them and asking

IF you stay in the UK and Its faulty you can get a refund up to 6months after sale date Since you don't have the receipt you will get an exchange or cred note for what ever it is priced at NOW, so if its now in the sale for a fiver that's all you'll get.

If you paid for the dress on a credit card/debit card then you can get a bank statement from the bank your card is with and that is your proof of purchase. Take this to the shop and they should be able to look it up on their till system. As for the fault, it should definitely be returned by the shop as the product is not in the condition it should be after one wear, due to no fault of your own. I work at Karen Millen and this is our policy.

Depends on the store and wether they think the fault was on the dress when you bought it. Most stores would do a straight swap without a receipt but would need a receipt if you wanted a refund of your money.

exchange is what they do, if they wont make a fuss demand to see the manager, explain to him it was a present that you brought for someone and how are you gonna give a faulty present to someone, a little lie wont hurt, as long as you get something back in the place, good l;uck

That would depend entirely what the fault is and whether or not it could have been damaged during your wearing of it eg zip, hem, seam etc. If it's an obvious manufacturing fault then possibly they will exchange it but if it was an obvious fault - you wouldn't have worn it - would you?
