I'd appreciate some enlightenment...

I went to the computer shop wanting to buy a 320 GB hard disk drive, but the computer guy said I should settle for the 120 GB since my 2.4 GHz Pentium4 might not work well with the 320.

Why? Is it worth the risk to go for the 320 anyway?

Because I really, really want the 320...

And also, would a bigger hard disk size speed up my sad, slow computer?

Thanks for anyone's help!

Um, don't go back to that computer store ever. I think that salesperson was huffing paint right before you came in. The only thing you should buy from that guy is weed cause he's smoking some good stuff. It's not the size of the drive that matters. It's the read write speed. You're probably looking at a 7200 RPM, which will be fine, although 10,000 RPM would be faster but much more expensive. The only issue is the operating system and BIOS. Some don't support 48bit Logical Block Addressing which allows you to install hard drives larger than 137.4 Gb. You seem to have a newer system so I'm sure yours supports this but that is the only reason I would think they wouldn't sell you the 320Gb HD. http://www.48bitlba.com/ check this site if you need any help with that. As for speed, upgrade the ram. More ram will definately help, but a hard drive upgrade will help too if your current drive is full.

Sometimes the motherboard or Windows do not recognize any hard drive bigger than 120 GB, but this has nothing to do with the processor.
If this happens it means that you will buy 320 and get 120 :S

No, it will not speed up your computer (you can set it to use more physical memory). Buying more RAM is one thing that will speed it up.

It should work without any problems. BUT it is not the big hard drive that would significantly speed up your PC. Consider increasing RAM if you still have less than 1Gb. 1Gb should be great for Win XP and 2Gb for Vista. If you are still on integrated graphics, consider a good graphics card. Also try disabling unnecessary startups.

I don't see why it wouldn't work

It won't speed anything up for you though
