There are two movies based on Steven King's novel with that title.
For the first, King sold the rights and creative control to Stanley Kuprick who made a movie about a guy, played by Jack Nicholson, who goes crazy in an isolated hotel and tries to kill his family. Jack delivers his usual over-the-top performance, and it's worth seeing just to get the famous, "Heeeeeeeeeere's Johhny!" line!
For the second movie, Mr King wrote the screenplay, and kept creative control. It's a made-for-US-TV mini series that's four hours long (without commercials, it originally aired in three two-hour segments) It's very faithful to the book which is about this:
An evil entity lives in the Overlook Hotel. For generations it has fed off the negative energy from various murders, suicides and broken hearts and spirits that occur in the hotel.
Jack Torrence is hired to be the winter watchman for the hotel and he brings his young family; Wendy, his wife, and Danny, his young son who has tremendous powers of ESP.
As the family is taking a tour of the hotel, the summer cook, Dick Halloran, takes Danny aside and tells him that he also has a touch of ESP and that his old Granny called it "The Shining." He tells Danny that there's bad things in the hotel, but that the things probably can't hurt Danny. Halloran's wrong!
I would agree with the first answer and recommend that you see the movie(s). They're both worth seeing, especially if you like Steven King's books.

A man takes a winter job as in innkeeper at a summer resort hotel while they are closed. His first profession is as a writer, and he plans to use the winter to write a book. He brings along his wife and young son to stay with him.
The inn is haunted, causing him to have visions and hear voices. His son is also affected by the haunting, and also sees people that aren't there. As their stay at the inn continues, the father eventually goes insane.
The ghosts the father sees convince him to try to kill his wife and son, and then himself. I won't tell you exactly how the story ends - it is a very good book and movie and I don't want to spoil it for you!
There are 2 versions of the movie: the classic with Jack Nicholson and a made for tv version with one of the guys from the tv show Wings. The tv version is much longer and includes a lot more from the book, however nothing can compare to Jack Nicholson!!

This is one of my all-time favorite horror flicks. I definitely think you should see the movie with no hint of what is to come. It is a very good movie. I promise you.
