It's got something to do with the first settlers to the "new world". They were really doing badly. Many died of starvation or dysentery. All of the bugs and things were new to them, and they had a hard time figuring out how to grow crops in their new environment.

At some point, the local natives got together with them and taught them how to do stuff for themselves. For example, I remember they taught them to plant a fish in the ground along with the corn. As an act of friendship they got together with the natives for a great feast.

It is probably the coolest holiday we celebrate here. For some reason, we have it on a Thursday, and the Friday that follows is this major shopping day that they call "Black Friday". They have tremendous sales at stores to draw people in. It's a madhouse. I got in a car accident when I was 16 on that day due to the massive congestion. Now I've learned, you just don't go out on Black Friday. Stay inside and bar the door.
