your daughter is perfectly right
you can look at it like this,
The definition of "5 per cent", means 5 per 100, which is 5 out of hundred, which is 5/100.
So 5% is nothing but 5/100, which is 0.05
5% of 69,900 means take a 5 from every hundred in 69,900.
Now, How many hundreds are there in 69900?
You do this by 69900/100, which is 699.
So now, take 699 fives, i.e., 699 * 5, i.e. 3495!!
So all you had to do was:
( 69900/100)X5
= 69900 X 5/100
= 69900 X 0.05
= 3495
So everytime you want to know whats 5%, you simply say 0.05 X that total.

3495 is correct. That is 5% of 69,900. If it helps you think of it easier... divide 69,900 by 100.. which gives you 699 (1%) and times that by 5 to get 5% which is 3495. Sometimes if your unsure it helps to check answers like that where you are thinking it through.

That is the right way to do it. If you want to do it in your head move the decimal one place to the left. This would give you 6,990 which is 10%. Then divide that by 2 to get 3495. 5%, 10%, and any mutiple of 10% are very easy to get by doing this.

Lets keep it simple here. We all get stuck with simple things in life!
What is 10% of 69900...its 6990 (if 100% meaning 69900 then one-tenth of 69900 is 6990)
What is half of 10%?...5% and what is the half of 6990?
You get that right...3495!
so half of 10%=5%=3495
Hope that would make it sound rite!
