well we have lots of animals dog, cats, rabbits, chickens, toads, & guinea pigs. But my step daughter doesn't have a pet of her own. Before my kids and I moved in she had a rabbit that lived with us that was hers but he's big and heavy and she is frighten of him, he has scratched her a few times.
Anyway I was thinking about getting my step daughter her own pet. we only have her half the week but I don't mind feeding it while she is at her mums. clean out etc will be when she is here.
I know she wants to help with the rabbits etc but finds herself just watching as my other children just do it coz they have their chores to do with the animals.
I was thinking alone the lines of a hamster or a rat something small and in doors. what do people think??
She has been asking her mum for a dog or any pet for that matter but her mum has said no, 'the cats wouldn't like it' which has upset her.

I think that is a brilliant idea, and a hamster would be ideal, small and easy to look after, and something that belongs to her. It will help her to get used to animals and reduce her fear.

Hi my son asked for a rat, I got one, now we have 7, such great pets for everybody, really tame and loveable, don't bite, hamsters bite for no reason, I have tamed 7 from youngsters and no blood drawn, eveen husband, and all visitors head for the big boys cage, can give human food as treats with no ill effects, unlike my house rabbit, everything upsets her tummy so children get miffed when I say don't give her that, but the rats enjoy everything, also they are easy to litter train and always WANT to go back to their cage, you should really get 2 though, they are sociable doesn't affect tamesness get 2 brothers or 2 sisters, easy to sex the boys get huge testicles which are apparent at 4 weeks, had everything over the years, RaTs are my no. 1choice, my daughter got 2 and my 4 year grandson loves them, so much she bought another last week, all hamsters do is chew the bars in their efforts to escape, my rats will come out at anytime day and night, all I do is call their names, and their response is quicker than any dog I ever had.....good luck check out fancy rats on web be careful though they are very addictive, if you got a cage big enough everybody could have one of their own, as long as all same sex.........

I would definately say a hamster is your best option. They take up hardly any room in the house are very easy to look after and are also very cheap. All they need is a run around in their ball. I probably wouldnt get a rat as they can be quite a bit more intelligent requiring alot more attention than the smaller rodents. My first pet was a hamster and we have just bought a dwarf hamster for my youngest brother who is 11. He loves the responsibilty and his hamster is the most pampered animal i have ever seen!

What about a rat snake as like you said you have your stepdaughter for half the week and rat snakes feed about ever 4-7 days some time longer.
They make the ideal pet for a beginner and they are very placid and low maintenance you could say.
I have a 14yr old daughter who didn't like snakes until i got Bev my Yellow rat snakes and then Kev a Great Plains rat snake which now my daughter loves to bits.
When i got Bev my daughter was 11yrs old and as a result of her getting over her fear of snakes she's doing a college course in Animal Care/Husbandry when she finishes high school next year.
As the course she has to handle exotic animals such as snakes.
Also the food is inexpensive and if unsure take her to a shop and see the snakes as she may be able to hold one if she ain't done so at school as most schools have a exotic pet day where a exotic pet owner brings in reptiles.
if not a snake then a hamster and they don't bite as i have a female Syrian hamster called ruby who is very gentle and has never bitten once also Gerbils are good pets as i have had them over 20+yrs.
Snakes they ain't as bad as what people think.

i used to be frightened of rats! by you know after i finally had one crawl on me i fell in love! they are so sweet and loving and they crawl all over you and sit on ur shoulder and things.. they are a good pet! better than hamsters!¬ they bite a lot more! i find that rats dont if bought from an early age, but cats and dogs do get along! i have two cats and just lost a dog and the dog we had first then one cat then the other so her mom is wrong to tell her that as a way saying no to a dog, as it is in fact untrue! u sound like a great mum! and step mum to be so thoughtful! well done!

What a cruel mother she is. I bet your step daughter loves coming to your house. Every child should have a pet of their own.
It's hard to say which would be the best for her as it would be nice for her to bond with it and as you only have her half the week it would be hard to bond fully.
Take her to a rescue center and look at the animals that they've got. If she's a bit timid of animals the rescue center will pair her up with the right pet. An RSPCA center will have a variety of animals.
Pitty Cinderella didn't have a step mother like you. You are a wicked step mother but in todays meaning of Wicked, it means GREAT!!!

I wouldn't buy another pet. I would just try and get her more involved in the pets that are there. She could feed the chickens, or let her do the rabbit care on the days that she is there - I'm sure your children would understand if you explained to them. Best of luck.

Get her a rat they are very intelligent and can be trained, easy to look after, but great fun, they love a cuddle and are not too fast, so easy to catch if they escape, i have had two they used to follow me all over the flat, and were very clean outside their cages.

If her mum has said no to the pet you will need to be carefull what you buy.
A pet rock will probably be acceptable or maybe a goldfish.
Or maybe sea monkeys or an ant farm
A budgie or lizard
