Wonderful friend I have had since we were 4 years old lost her hubbie today--he was in La Paz, Mexico with his best friend on vacation. How do you expedite getting his body out of Mexico, it will be very expensive but could take 2 weeks??

Li'l Abner,
Here is the phone number to use to get assistance when a US Citizen dies while out of the Country:
U.S. Department of State
Bureau of Consular Affairs
Overseas Citizens Services Office:
1-888-407-4747
Give them a call, this agency will be able to work with the US Embassy in Mexico to assist your friend.
I agree with the Chaplain and others who suggested that your friend contact a funeral home. Funeral homes can work with the State Department and with the Mexican authorities to make arrangements for returning your friend's husband. Funeral directors will make arrangements to meet the plane (or other vehicle) carrying his remains. The funeral home might also be able to help obtain a death certificate, if not then the Citizen's Services Office might have advice on how to get one.
It might be helpful for your friend to have information available about any insurance her husband might have-health insurance-for the hospital, traveler's insurance-through his credit card company or separate policy, life insurance policy.
If your friend is a member of a faith group, attends a church, then be sure that her clergy has been notified. It's likely that their help and support will be very helpful.
My heart goes out to you and your friend.

Try contacting the Mexican Consulate nearest you to get information on what is required to return the body.
Also at the same time try contacting the State Department to find out what can be done to expedite the return.
Also contact a large funeral home in your area and ask the same questions.
I am not sure whether this will help but it should give you some info. to start with.
Please convey my sympathy to your friend's widow.
And I'll offer one piece of advice on dealing with her grief... What you say is not as important as how you listen. If you let her talk and encourage her she will work her way through it.

I've heard this can happen. Do either of you know a senator, congressman? Maybe time to call in a favor.
I'm so very sorry, especially under the circumstances. Must be very difficult for her as seems this was unexpected?

Did he purchase his ticket with a credit card?
Check what kind of coverage it has.
Or if he purchased travelers insurance. It might cover bringing his body home..as mentioned above.
I also heard of it being easier bringing cremated remains home.
I'm so sorry about the loss.

Check with hospital, funeral home, airlines, police dept. You need someone who speaks English and has some authority down here.

Have the body cremated. It is easier to export cremated remains...less health issues to deal with. Check with the US embassy..they should be able to help and/or advise your friend. Sorry for her loss...She is lucky to have a friend like you...God bless............................
