Thanks guys. I have already been diagnosed as having IBS some years ago but never suffered from heart burn like this before. The hearburn is more or less constant on a daily basis and last night was the secind time I was woken up twice in the night with that horrible feeling of trying to swallow constantly!!

That's caused by drinking too much, in particular young acidic wines (particularly white) or acidic beer, too quickly or without food.

It is also caused by additive-rich convenience foods. Avoid salty snacks, raw onions, cheap "cheese" flavourings and processed savoury food generally, ready-made pizza in particular and avoid too much salty mineral water such as Pellegrino.

I used to suffer terrbly from this until I started eating proper food and stopped eating processed crap from packets and jars and factory-farmed meat.

Now I can drink as much as I like of beer, wine and even very peaty whisky like Laphroaig, which used to cause me almost instant heartburn!

Now I can also eat raw onions and strong salty cheeses without ill effect.

I also lost over a stone in excess weight.

I used to buy Rennies in large boxes, but I haven't had a single one for years now.

Are you on some other medication? For example most of those alzheimers drugs increase acetylcholine and that increases acid production in the intestine and fluid production in the GI track in general.

Some acetylcholinesterase insecticides do the same thing.

Neville is right that an acid reducer like pepcid or rantadine can make a big difference, caffeine promotes acid secretion, coffee not only contains caffeine but also essential oils that promote inflamation of the GI track. Pepper also has irritant oils.

Laying on your right side usually also helps having the stomach contents drain into the intestine rather than return up the throat. (unless your one of the rare people whose anatomy is different).

I'm a medical researcher. It is widely agreed among physicians and medical paraprofessionals, that initial diagnosis, mostly by using a typical acid reflux symptoms questionnaire, is necessary to ensure the most effective and quick treatment for this condition. Approx 70% of the acid reflux diagnostics that are based on the presence of typical symptoms are accurate. Since acid reflux, also called GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease), can cause patients a great deal of discomfort and result in severe complications, it is highly important to know how to identify its symptoms in order to quickly diagnose and treat it.

If you know you have acid reflux you can try this natural program http://acidreflux.toptips.org

Yes reflux.. Stomach contents and acid coming back up the gullet, The food pipe outside the stomach is not lined to prevent acid irritating it, hence the pain and discomfort.. Short term relief from something like Gaviscon.. Longer term relief from Zantac (ratinidine) or a proton pump inhibitor to reduce stomach acid levels long term... Also get checked that you do not have a hiatus hernia to the sphincter valve that should seal the stomach from the oesophagus......

Acid reflux- The 'water' in your mouth is stomach acid, does it tatse bitter? You can get medication off the Dr (such as omeprazole) if its that bad it's waking you through the night. Don't eat a few hours before bed, avoid spicy food, caffeine and if you smoke....Try and give up as it all exacerbates it. Sleep propped up or raise the head of your bed.

In addition to Neville's answer, it should help if you raise your pillows, or even raise the head of the bed (put the legs at the head end up on e.g. bricks). Avoid spicy foods. Keep a glass of water by you too, so that you can rinse your throat if you do get a reflux. Antacid tablets from the chemist/pharmacy can also help.

I had that too. I was diagnosed with IBS. Irritable Bowel Syndrome. It can flare up when you are stressed, improper diet.
infact I used to have liquid come up while i was sleeping, great way to wake up ! The liquid burnt my throat + it was sore for all the next day. I would swallow it back down, not being fast enough to get to the bathroom. I am taking prescribed pills for this + it does make a big diff.

It sounds more like you have GERD. Elevating the head of the bed six inches helps some people. Also, beware of certain foods in the evening. I can't eat any meat fat or grease, no tomato sauce like spaghetti or pizza. No lasagna. No raw onions. No overeating.
I finally talked to the doctor and he prescribed Nexium. No more problems!!

hi
It sounds like you have a gastric infection! It's a bad bug that has been going around, we all caught it in my house. Drink plenty of fluids & if need be call a doctor out! I hope you get well soon! Usually it lasts around 24 hours but unfortunatley it can be alot longer!
