Different schools' policies vary as to what would warrant a suspension. I know a boy who got suspended for blocking a punch; but the puncher got expelled. The suspension seemed unfair to me, but it was school policy.
I don't think you should be suspended, judging by your description. A couple of pushes in response to an accidental collision sounds almost reflexive to me, not fully intentional. The bad part is when he started punching you, and he should be suspended for that. But I didn't see the fight.
How to tell your parents? Just tell them.
The outcome of this for you will depend largely on you. Even if you are unjustly suspended, like my friend, it serves as a life lesson. And it shouldn't interfere with your grades or greatly affect your normal activities.
If you start seeing yourself as a victim, though, it will have a negative affect on your life.
And even if they judge that you weren't at fault, I'm guessing that you could probably have prevented this fight; it will give you the chance to think about your reactions in the future.
So, learn whatever you can from it.
No doubt this story will entertain your friends and family for quite some time, once they get over the shock.

teachers and Principles are notoriously stupid in working out facts so don't expect them to understand, but your parents should. Tell them and feel the power of good parenting as they march up to the school after telling u off 4 fiting. if they don't your support might need to be the counsillor after that legal representation because some people say different things while being on the record. if you have a recording device tape whatever meetings you have. Just tell your parents exactly what happened. Be honest and straightforward about it. This incident will not ruin your chances in life. Stuff like this happens all the time. The dude who started the problem should be suspended, not you.

Technically, you are still fighting even though you didn't started it. The school have the right to suspend you. But however you can appeal.
You can tell your parents you acted in self defense.
For the future... i can't say...

Unfortunately the school can do whatever it wants. You don't have the same rights when you're in school. Say you're sorry, and that you only pushed him. You might get off being suspended.

no you shouldn't be suspended for a thing that you didn't do
tell to your principal or who ever talks to you the whole story but don't be nervous like just telling a story to your friends so they would believe you
tell your parents cause you you said you didn't start the fight
