(1/3)t+(1/5)t= 1 . . . . factor t
t(1/3 + 1/5) = 1 . . . common denominator = 15
t (5+3)/15 = 1
8/15 t = 1
t = 15/8

first we get rid of the fractions
and since it's an equation - we do the same thing to both sides
common is 3 x 5 - so we use 15
therefore
5t +3t = 15
8t = 15
t = 15/8ths
or 1 7/8

Multiply both sides by 15 to get rid of the denominator
