I'm wondering if anyone please can help a tech-unsavvy newbie? Currently, my desktop is connected (via ethernet cable) to my cable provider, via the Motorola SB5100 Surfboard they provided. However, I've an old unused D-Link G604T ADSL wireless router, which I have from my former ADSL provider. I'd like to link my laptop to the network, and I'm wondering if I can use that D-Link ADSL as my router.

You cannot connect the two, they are not compatible. That ADSL router combines a DSL modem and router. It connects to the phone line on the WAN side and provides a wireless signal and a 4 port Ethernet switch on the LAN side. It only works with DSL service on a phone line; you cannot use it with your cable modem.

You need to purchase a wired, wireless or combination router to use with your Surfboard. Examples of a suitable combination wired/wireless router would be the D-Link DI-624 or Linksys WRT54G. These both use a standard Ethernet port on the WAN side and will connect directly to your Surfboard.

plenty relies upon on the 'N' router you have obtained, in case you're taking a glance on the handbook it is going to tell you if this is completed.... in case you have no longer any handbook than a rapid 'suck it and notice' thank you to do issues is to plug an Ethernet lead from between the ports of the Sky router to (often) port between the 'N' router & then plug (with yet another Ethernet lead) into your laptop from the 'N' router...if that works then save on :) If that fails then you definitely particularly choose for to make sure the 'N' router handbook... it relies upon on the router purposes. playstation - no longer too difficulty-free changing your Sky modem because of the fact the username & password which you require for yet another ADSL modem are encrypted interior the Sky modem :( - could be completed despite the fact that it might require you to be exterior the words and stipulations of your Sky contract :( HTH

yes you can and here is how to do it

from the motorola modem to the dsl router in any port other than the first port that most time mark ethernet. you will want to use the wireless router as a switch instead of a router. what will happen here you can connect the modem to the router and get wireless connection if you need more info contact me

The dsl router only has a phone line connection as it has a built in modem. You need a cable router which has a WAN CAT5 connection for your modem.
