I just bought a Dell laptop in July and I love it. The customer support is great. They helped me set up my home wifi step by step. I have not had any problems with my computer. There are many free benefits when buying one too such as 3 gigabyte backup and more. I like the idea of building your own computer picking the options you want or need. Delivery is fast also. No problems with Dell and if I did I can always call them 24hrs a day. Go with Dell.

HP\ compaq are almost same and they're better than Dell in terms of laptop performance...
but a big no in terms of the touch pad, they're very glossy and slippery...
i wud suggest lenovo or IBM...can get them in some deals ...

Out of those 3? I'd pick dell. They sometimes have great deals on their products and from what I've seen look pretty quality. Hp's are good as well. I would avoid toshiba or acer.

Compaq has had a history of overheating
Dell has awful support and I've yet to meet someone that hasn't had a hardware issue
HP pre-loads their computer with more crap that anyone and its hell to get rid of.
I only buy Apple these days...even if I was going to run Windows I'd probably still buy Apple hardware

dell has many problems compaq is made by hp (its their low end pc line) and hp is very good for home users

Do not get a Dell! I bought one lap top and desk top . the desk top was stuck the first day I got it and they had me taking it apart playing with all kinds of stuff and ended it up being flawed and the lap top I got was not even what I ordered and total problems with this one too. They will take it back but what a hassle !
