A group of Puritans came to the New World in 1620, settling in what is now Massachusetts, to set up an exclusively Puritan enclave. ('Seeking religious freedom' as our history books say). They were not prepared for life in the harsh climate of Massachusetts. None of them knew how to hunt or farm. Fully half of them died that first Winter.
The next year they received much help from the Indians. Strangely, even in 1620, they met Indians who spoke English! Turns out they were not the first English-speaking people in Massachusetts. So at harvest time they held a feast and invited the Indians to join them. The purpose of the feast was to thank God for their survival.
Today it's a national holiday, celebrated on the last Thursday of November. It used to be seen as the beginning of the Christmas season, but these days the Christmas season begins about the end of September. 8^<
Traditionally you have a big meal. A turkey and 'all the trimmings'--cranberry sauce, mashed potatoes, candied yams, green bean casserole, etc. etc. Families get together and everyone brings something. Everyone eats until they can no longer move their jaws, and then all the men retire to the family room and watch a football game, usually falling asleep in front of the TV.
Religious people see it as a religious holiday, but EVERYONE, religious or not, celebrates it and loves it.
Its on a Thursday and you usually get the following day off from work to recover. (Perhaps this is to compensate for not getting the day after Christmas as a holiday, as they do in the civilized world). But the Friday after Thanksgiving is also the busiest shopping day of the year, the first 'official' day of Christmas shopping.

Thanksgiviving is the third thursday of November. It is a time to get all the family together, overeat lots of foods, generally turkey and ham are big favorites, and then sleep or watch football games. It was created based on the story of the Pilgrim giving a feast after their first year in America. They invited the local Indian tribe because they, (the indians), saved many of them over the winter by sharing their food stores with them, and they taught the pilgrims how to grow food here in America. It was a thanksgiving for suriving and starting to thrive here in a strange and dangerous land.

It began when the pilgrims rejoice at a safe voyage from England
and a bountiful first harvest
they shared it with the Indians who taught them many
living skills

No worries mate!
I will explain it to you
When the evil eastern Europeans first settled in the U.S. they were starving and had nothing to eat, so the native Americans, "Indians" showed them how to plant native crops like corn, and murder poor helpless birds like the native turkey, and they had a feast and was thankful that God provided their needs
