Not many sections are left. But if you go to Barstow California they have an old route 66 museum. It is free too.
Some nostalgia. Interesting. Been there. It is in the old passenger rail station.
Enjoy your visit.

Been watching The Grapes of Wrath recently ? I hate to disappoint you but for all intents and purposes Rt 66 no longer exists as a continuous long distance road .A very large portion of it has been paved over by interstate highways ;I-55,I-44, I-40-& 1-10.What remains of Rt 66 are usually short stretches of road here and there. I think that the longest stretch of Rt 66 that's left is the stretch from Ash Fork AZ to Oatman AZ via Seligman & Peach Springs .
All is not lost,There are various Rt 66 associations that will help you cobble together maps so that you can drive either on or in the shadow of much of the original road.
There is also a young woman who will more than likely answer this question who will go on for 62 paragraphs or so waxing poetic about the virtues of this once glorious road
Personally i think that the romance of Rt 66 has far exceeded the reality of it .Even when it was brand spanking new it wasn't all that great a road and for the Okies of The Grapes of Wrath fame it was a road of sadness and hardship.
Personally were I to find and drive an historic American US Highway * I would pick the old Lincoln Highway while it doesn't have it's own theme song it does have the advantage of running from coast to coast thru some incredibly beautiful and very historic American places.
* Before there were the interstates there were US Highways .The Lincoln Highway was the first continuous highway across America

When you rent your car pay the extra for a GPS sytem.
It will pay for itself the fist time you make a wrong turn.
Take extra food and water cause some stops can be far apart.
Use sun block, and get good sun glases.
And wear a hat in the sun.
Have fun Route 66 is still a great road trip.

We also visited the direction sixty six Museum and it turned right into a hoot too---loved it!! I've driven through a lot of the desert and it's really not so bad...unless you are driving in the middle of summer !
As for Route 66...it's very disjointed !
Half the fun is just finding the separate parts of it !

It's unlikely you'll get lost, unless you go offroad or are really bad following a map... but if that is a great concern, be sure to get GPS...also a Thomas Guide or something as good...and don't forget to check out the old Gold mines along the route and wine country (Napa,California).

it's hard to take a wrong turning, nearly all the roads are straight. If you lookat an arial view it just looks like a grid - LOL

Just relax and enjoy yourself.
