What can I do to try and convince my local animal shelter/mayor/'law people' to get rid of the breed specific legislations in my city? Is there a petition I can get, or is there nothing I can do, or a small group can do?

All you can do is try to pursuade elected officials that a specific breed - I assume you mean pitbulls - are not really as dangerous as the experts, the statistics, and common sense tell us that they are.

People have believed whackier things - there IS still a flat earth society, after all - but not many of them.

Be advised though, if you are "instrumental" in getting a pitbull ban overturned then the next victim of a pitbull mauling may well try to sue YOU for his damages, medical bills, pain and suffering etc.
