Just a suspicion, but if there is a heaven, Ford getting in probably didn't hinge on an act of mercy. I remember well when that happened. My first feeling was disgust. But later I came to realize Ford really believed that pardoning Nixon was what the country needed to close the book on Watergate and start licking their wounds. Not sure he was right, but I think he may have been. I remember that even though so many were angry, the overall feeling was like a sigh of relief that it was over.

Ford basically said that every day when he walked into the oval office, everything on his desk had to deal with Nixon. So in the best interest of the country (not Nixons, although I'm sure it played a part) he pardoned him.

It would be nice to have a President and Congress nowadays who would put the interests of the general public first, instead of their own agendas, and I mean that as a crticism of both the liberals and conservatives.

Hey it's G. Cheese! I'm a liberal but, after seeing the silly fiasco about Clinton, which cost millions that this country could have used on other things, I changed my mind about Ford's pardon of Nixon. It would have cost the country a lot of money, and he had already resigned. I think it was the right thing to do, in retrospect. I also believe that Jerry Ford was possibly the only honest republican ever.

Yes. Yes he did.

Nixon's Watergate problems were about covering up an employee's tampering of one confidential FBI file on a political rival.

One.

However, Filegate was a lesser scandal in scope but involved HUNDREDS (estimated 400-900) of such FBI files of political rivals of the Clinton White House. These files were improperly ordered and delivered to the White House during the Clinton administration and were later found in the Clinton's personal residential quarter's - (with Hillary's fingerprints all over them no less!) She shrugged her shoulders and claimed she had no idea how they got there. That was that. (give me a break...) The personal residence of the President is off limits to almost everyone on the planet, strictly enforced and heavily monitored.

Nixon was bad for covering up the wrongful obtaining of one personnel file and he resigned because of it...yet the Clinton's involvement was completely ignored when they had an estimated 400-900 such files - the very same type as the file that was the entire basis for Watergate and claimed ignorance as their defense.

So was Nixon the bad guy in comparison, really? Nah. (And he was never impeached either.)

Geri Ford's up there drinking Tabor Hill wine with Richard right now...lol

I hate Nixon (or Bush 1.0)... I don't blame Ford for wanting to end it, but I think Nixon just did too much to be pardoned...

I seriously doubt that it hurt him.

Nixon was a great man, a great leader, a wonderful public servant throughout all his life and one of he brightest presidents this country has ever known.

I really appreciated the way he got the hippies off the streets. - that was great.....

If many people bother to answer this, the answers will be silly. Nobody knows what happens to us after we die...and I mean NOBODY knows...it's all conjecture.
