Its a base model for behavior modification. The very basic model for behavior modification. Do you remember Pavlovs dogs? When Pavlov rang a bell, he would treat his dogs when they came running. He continued to do this and after a while stopped giving them treats. Guess what though, they continued to come to him until the behavior was extinguished. In essence, a person will shape the bahavior of the subject. i.e. If you want your dog to bark everytime you before you give him a treat, you must reinforce his bahavior when he does so, like giving him a treat. It will make his behavior much more predictable and you can predict what he will do as a response to certain stimulus. Now that you have him barking before you give him treats, its time to extinguish that behavior. This is easier to do than some think. Simply do not reward him when he barks. It may take a while but he will stop when he realizes that he doesn't get treats anymore for barking. Now, reshaping the barking behavior after extinguishing it can be much more difficult or easy depending on the subject.

A schedule of reinforcement is used in behavior modification. You make the schedule depend on a time interval, or on a correct response, or on a set number of correct responses, etc.
