Amanda is right fresh cuttings are important
I take cuttings usually 2-3 inches. The bottom cut just below a node(where a leaf or branch comes from the stem) This the meristem area where cells can form what ever plant needs ie roots , leaves, stem.
Dip cutting in rooting hormone and insert into a free draining mix, keep mix damp at all times. Cuttings can take a few weeks to a few months to root enough to pot up. You Dont need to check every 6 hours , thats bulls hit
Either get your self a book on basic plant propagation or contact a local college that runs horticultural classess
Growing plants from cuttings is easy, you just need to now the proceedures and a healthy dose of common sense
I have been propagating plants for years, at home and work, I still get failures, but thats how I learn

Cut the cutting stem at an angle to open up the largest area of stem,,,dip it in some rooting powder or rooting gel is better as it doesn`t clog up the stem,,dip it in about 1 inch up the stem then pot up and water well,,take 3 or 4 cuttings as some may not take,,after a week you should notice small nodules appear on the stem,,this is the cutting throwing out some new roots,,keep it warm and well lit,,check it avery 6 hours or so,,,

Lots of things root in water. Cutting 6-8" long, strip lower leaves, clear container of water. You should see roots in 1-2 weeks.

the answer really depends on the type of plant you're asking about... could you get a pic of the plant or the name?
