Yeah, I like it! Never thought to use it before but its really cool and original, in a good way! Not an 'I'm trying to be unique but it really sucks" way!! lol
You could spell it....
Haylen,
Hailen or
Haelen
But personally I think just 'Halen' is the most masculine looking way.
Best of luck and good choice!

Yeah it's nice that it has some meaning behind it for you and your parents, but you have to put the child in mind first, will your son like it or do you think maybe he'll get teased for it because it sounds too much like "helen" and not many people from his generation would know van halen.

...wow. I actually liked it.
It isn't like Aiden or something that EVERYONE seems to be using for their kids...and you didn't come up with some RIDICULOUS way of spelling it...
I think that "Halen" is a great name! Just don't go messing with it by making it "Haylin", "Haelyn" or something like that.
And as for the "Helen" thing...sure, he may get that from time to time, but it's all a part of growing up and learning to deal with other people. It's NOT going to be that big of a deal, and probably won't happen that frequently.
My first name in unusual as well, and I STILL have to teach people have to say it...as a result, I've learned patience, and (if I ever have any) my children will also have unusual names.
...I'm still kinda stunned by how much I like the sound of it. And since both of you like it, go for it! Awesome name, with or without the band reference.

Halen is a GREAT name. Don't respell it. To avoid the confusion with Helen make the middle name more obviously masculine like James. Personally I think Halen James is a sweet name. lol.

I certainly agree that a boy named Halen will get teased ad nauseum and called Helen. And every teacher, coach etc will mispronounce the name. For that reason I would not pick that name, even though I do like it. It's just too much like Helen.

Naming your kid is like getting a tattoo. except worse because the kid has to live with it too. I know someone named Wonderful and she hates it. The rest of her family loved it. It's cool that everyone in you family likes van halen but will the kid?
Halen is a pretty cool name though. Maybe just spelling difference. like Haylen or Hailen

Halen is an awesome name!! Take it from me tho, you will get more grief over it than he will!! I love rock music, and I named my son Axel, unique...haven't heard of anyone else with the name which is why I love it! Everyone gives me crap about it though saying I copied Guns N Roses, I don't care...I liked the name, it's my kid, my choice! Do what is going to make you happy! Go for it if you're ready to take the blame! lol, good luck with baby too!!
I would leave the spelling alone..Don't get too trendy, stay classic.

I think your hesitation about the confusion with girl's names is on track. When I saw it, I read "Haley" the first time.
Instead of taking the name directly from the band, can you make a short list of your favorite artists and choose one of their names? Hero names are great, but Halen strikes me as doomed to be confused for a girl's name.
Van, on the other hand, is a great choice.
