Look, it's NOT simple to explain, short of saying:
Once, the Universe was the size of an atom. Then, it suddently expanded to the size of a grapefruit instantly! As time passed, it got bigger and bigger, and never stopped growing. It's still growing today!
For some pictures, you can use the textbook definition:

The hand of God opens a gas valve, lights a simple match....and ZA-BOOOOOMMMM!!!!! A violent malestrom of gas explosions create solid matter that smashes together, forming planets that expand (to this day) outward in a endless infinte motion.
Ok.....maybe that's a wee tad too much for the kiddies......

i dunno
do a big explosion with bits of planets flying everywhere
u could hav a series of pictures eg the explosion, the planets forming then our universe as it is today
think about what pictures come into your head when u think about the big bang
