I am an Asian-American female student who is currently a senior in high school (c/o 2008) about to apply to the following UCs: Berkeley, Los Angeles, San Diego, and Davis. I am wondering what my chances are of getting into those schools.

- I have a 4.47 College weighted GPA, 3.81 weighted. I am ranked 2 of 415 in my school.
- I was the historian, vice president, and I am now currently the president of my school's KEY (Kiwanis Educating Youth--a community service organization) Club, and I am the president and founder of my school's Zinch Flavor (www.zinch.com).
- My test scores (this is what worries me)... SAT: 1820, ACT: 27 (I got a 31 in math. Science brought me down.), SAT II: Math 2 - 620, Literature - 590. I am retaking the SAT in December, and I retook the SAT IIs two weeks ago.

I wrote my personal statements, and they are pretty good.

What do you think?

For Cal, your scores look a bit low according to the averages from last year:

See page 37 http://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/educators/counselors/resources/materials/ITU.pdf

However, everything else looks pretty good. If your personal statement is good, you'll probably get into all of them (even Berkeley).

Good luck!

I would say you should definitely take the SAT again. I had a huge improvement my second time. Went from a 1730 to a 1930. Had like a 4.2 weighted GPA. I just graduated high school in june. I got into UCSB, UCSD, Rejected from UCD, UCI, UCLA Its getting so tough these days to get into the college you want. Senior year does matter so make sure to keep up good work. You should be able to get into Merced, Santa Cruz definitely. Maybe USCB, UCSD, UCD, UCI Berkeley and LA might be a reach. What you have to do is make sure that you declare a major. The schools i was rejected from I was undeclared to all of them which makes it harder to get in. Seriously, declare a major. Also look into state schools. They are cheaper and often give more of a practical education. Try San Diego, Chico, Sonoma, there are a ton! Good Luck!!!

As I'm sure you are aware, these are the four most competitive UCs in the system, so the competition is fierce. Your grades are excellent - congratulations! Also, being ranked #2 in your class is definitely going to help you. You are correct in identifying the test scores as your greatest challenge, but they aren't impossibly low. I definitely would recommend retaking the SATs, but if you are just a person who has trouble taking standardized tests, don't despair. If your school is known to be competitive, they may respect your GPA more than the scores.

Sounds like you should apply to find out. Sounds good to me, but then again I'm not on the Admission Board to any of those UCs. Never know until you try! Good luck. Don't worry.
