Does any know of any good books that teach how to make these beads for beginners? Or...what should I buy to get started?

Go to polymerclaycentral.com. They have tutorials and links to so many things that it will take you forever to go through them all. If you have a Hobby Lobby or Micheal's, they have rolling tools in different sizes and shapes to make beads with. If you can't get to them, go to makinsclay.com or poly-tools.com. They will have them.

The link I followed directed me to glass beads...which is why those are shiny. However, Coating the polymer clay bead with any type of clear coat will make it shiny, whether its varnish, clear glue, modge podge, acrylic sealer, or acrylic gloss mediums. Also, with much buffing with a soft buffing tool (say, on a dremel tool) or a cloth will eventually leave a shine without using a clear coat. You could also coat them with clear resin for the same look.

Hi there, I'm not an expert on polymer beads. I have made some in the past but prefer to stick to silver ;-)

Try looking here, there's some great people and information.
