I have a paper due in DECEMBER. And I am completely confused about what to write it on.
1. Select one of the generals who fought during the Civil War in the _mytown__area. Research how he came to be involved and what his contribution was. Finally, explain the impact he had on the Civil War as a whole.
2. Research a current medical issue, write a detailed analysis of the issue, and discuss the possible actions society needs to take to deal with the problem.

Which one would you choose... I'M indecisive

Well, if you live in the South, #1 might be a good option, depending on where exactly you live. On the other hand, current medical issues are as thick as bats, and there's all sorts of commentary on many of them. So, although #1 is potentially easier, #2 has abundant possibilities; AIDS, SARS, West Nile, people refusing inoculations, etc, etc.

My favorite subject in school is military history. You didn't list what area you're in so it's hard to say. Are you in the North or South?

1. One of my favorite Civil War generals to write about is Gen. William Sherman (Northern side). He had a tremendous impact on the Civil War as a whole, namely his infamous "march to the sea" that many Southerners are still bitter about to this day. He advocated a "scorched earth" policy and his armies destroyed everything in their sight while cutting a scar across the South, all the way to the ocean. His thinking behind this was that it would make the South pay such a high price for the war, that they would never try seceding from the Union again. Almost 100 years later, the Allied powers in WW2 used this same mentallity (learned directly from Sherman's example in the Civil War) when dealing with Nazi Germany. We basically leveled the entire country, making the price of war so terrible that they would not try to provoke war again (remember, WW1 happened only 30 years prior).

2. A few of the easy current medical issues to write on are: heart disease, childhood and adult obesity, and childhood and adult diabetes. A HUGE factor that contributes to all of this is our fast food culture. Possible actions are to eat less fast food which would force the industry to change and weaken their impact on targeting our children. Unfortunately, the link between fast food and its effects arent that easy to see for many people for some reason. It is easier to see how smoking is linked directly to lung cancer. People finally wised up and smoking is way down, marketing to our kids is gone (remember Joe Camel?), and the issue isn't as bad as it used to be. Perhaps the same will happen with the fast food/obesity epidemic in the future?

I'd choose the current medical issue. There is a plethora of topics--stem cell research vs. non-stem cell research, treatments for diseases which have poorly tested or inaccurately reported results, medical opinions which have been insufficiently researched, poorly enforced standards, etc. Your paper has to be an opinion piece, but the medical issues invite a greater variety of independent thought, while the history paper can be informative, contain more solid facts, but will probably need to be supported by an "expert" opinion. I also don't live in the hometown of any civil war generals.
