The complex that I currently live informed me today that when my lease is up in February, I will have 60 days after to either move into another unit, and have my rent go up from $1129 with some paid utilities to $1410 plus water, sewage and garbage or to find a new place to live. They said it's because they need to renovate the remaining apartments that haven't been renovated so they can sell the property. Can they legally do this? And if so, can they legally force me to pay more for another unit, when they are making me move into another unit and it is not voluntary?

When the lease is up in February they have to legal obligation to do anything. They could have asked you to leave (with notice) at that point and it sounds like that is exactly what they are doing.

Essentially they are telling you that you are leaving your existing apartment at the end of the lease term and they are providing you with another option (maybe not a great one, but they are offering).

It sounds like everything is on the up and up from their point of view!

You've been given a choice. You can move to another unit in the complex, or you can leave the complex entirely. Yes, the management can do this. Frankly, they were not even required to offer you a different unit in the complex. They could have simply told you that your lease is not being renewed.

Do not be confused here. You're not being FORCED to do anything. You have been given options from which to choose.

Unless there is some local rent control law, it seems to me that they are within their rights. They could, after all, not offer you another unit at all. It's a new ball game once your lease is up. It sounds like they want to keep you as a tenant, but at a price.

yes. Just like a city can give an exclusive contract to one cable company, an apartment complex can do the same. If not, then there could be two or more sets of wires running to each apartment. Just how could they run the second set of wires and think of the mess at the main switch box for each company.. If you want to fight it the best approach would be to get Comcast to fight it.

because it is a lease they can put whatecer they want into that NEW contract, so yes it is legal.

Try going to Your state, province, or territories residency board
