Auburn in 2004 was worse, much worse. Penn State in '94 didn't deserve the national title.
As for the 9th or 17th team feeling screwed, it's a lot easier to justify having one of those teams feel cheated by a playoff system vs. the 3rd team getting screwed by the BCS.

The BCS is 50% popularity and 50% of actual game play.
Today, I heard some "experts" saying that Kansas does not deserve to play in the national title game right now because "their program is not supposed to win."
Look at who has been winning the championship game. All of the programs have "winning traditions". Florida State has the lowest athletics budget at $38 million. In the BCS, having a big, popular program that has money is more important than actually WINNING GAMES.
I think a big reason the BCS is still run this way is because they get the big, popular teams that has millions of fans to watch the game. Imagine what would happen if there was a playoff and two teams like Wake Forest and Boise State made the championship game. It could be a ratings nightmare for FOX. They wouldn't make as much money and would lose viewers. Keeping the biggest teams in keeps ratings up.
The BCS is not a true championship, and college football is severly hindered by the fact that there is rarely have a national champion that doesn't have something controversial surrounding the team. To be a true championship, all teams must have an equal chance to win the title, whether they are in the biggest conference or the smallest. That means that teams like Hawaii should have the same opportunities that USC has to win the national title.
Now, I know that most people will argue that Hawaii doesn't deserve to play for it, but WHY NOT? Can you give me a good reason beyond their conference or schedule? Why not give Boise State that chance last season? Going back to Kansas, how can you deny a team that has perfectly done everything they can to win a championship the chance to play for it, especially when the teams playing for it made a mistake? Can you consider this championship a real one if every team doesn't have a chance to win even if they do everything right?
Let's be realistic. The BCS isn't about crowning a champion. College football now has become all about making as much money as possible. They don't even deny it anymore. The bowls come out and state clearly how much the teams get for playing in the bowls. There's not much respect left in it. It will just continue on as the big money maker.
You're right, someone will get screwed this year. It will either be Kansas for going undefeated and not making the national championship game, or Oregon for not screwing up and falling below Kansas. I already think Oregon has been on the short end of things too much, but I think that I would feel worse for Kansas if they didn't make it. In that case, they would have been perfect yet not get a chance to play for the championship. If Oregon doesn't get the chance after playing perfect the rest of the way, they would also be cheated, but they did make one mistake this season, and if they hadn't, they would be #1 and probably make the game.
(I know I jumped all over the place here, but I just kept thinking of new things to say.)

yea i would have loved to have seen the huskers play penn st in 1994, and it was a shame they didnt get to. same goes for auburn in 04. but almost every year, whether it be a unbeaten team or a one loss team, someone will feel cheated. college football as a whole is unfair. although you could make a case that with a playoff the #9 or #17 seed being left out, but i would rather see that then an undefeated top three team have no shot at all. im all in favor of a 12 team playoff, similair to the NFLs

Oregon in 01, now I can't argue that they were the best that year, but they were at least 2nd.
So here's the run down for those that don't remember.... The ducks (10-1) were ranked 3rd behind Nebraska and Miami. We needed a Nebraska or Miami loss to go to the NC game, our prayers were answered and Nebraska lost to Colorado in the Big 12 conference title game, but when the BCS rankings came out Nebraska only dropped to #2 snubbing the Ducks.
Results of the NC game Nebraska looked like peewee football team playing Miami, wasn't even close. The ducks settled for the Fiesta ball, who played the big 12 champ, Colorado. The Ducks kicked the sh*t out of Colorado.
That may not be the biggest snub, but the Ducks aren't contenders often but when they are, they get the shaft... so I'm holding my breath till the end of the season.

The 94 Penn state team is why we have a BCS, and I think it screwed it up even more. The old system, with the possiblility of two champions, was much better. Sometimes, there just isn't a clear cut number one, and this season, I think, is going to be another one. They need to go back to the old way, but instead of having conference tie ins be set in stone, they should be more like a guide, to get the best matchups.

Auburn in 04. Coming from a UGA fan, that means something. If you can manage a perfect record in the SEC, that has powerhouses Florida, UGA, LSU, Auburn, Alabama (coming back around) you deserve a spot in the national championship game

I think that's probably the worst snub of recent memory.
Almost every year that the BCS has been in place, at least one or two teams every year has had a reason to complain.
Tulane, Auburn, Boise State, Oregon, USC...the list goes on and on.

How about Boise State last year? They were the ONLY undefeated team, but somehow they weren't national champions. They played some easy teams, like every team does, but they played plenty of good teams too. Of course, Boise State isn't going to draw the viewers that florida and ohio state will, so sorry boys, no national championship for you! Florida had lost a game.
After last year, I have nothing but contempt for the BCS. It's bull feathers.
