The leak is right up against the bowl where the water flows into it from the tank.

The leak is in the elbow pipe that the water flows into the bowl from the tank. It's right at the point where the pipe goes into the bowl. Just to be more clear.

The tank is held onto the bowl seat by a couple of bolts. Between the tank and the seat, there is a rubber gasket.

If you can move the tank by pressing on it, then those bolts are not tight enough.

Try tightening them just a bit. If that doesnt work, then plan on replacing that gasket.

If the toilet is very old, then the gasket may have dried out, and will need to be replaced.

To replace the gasket (usually rubber), shut the water off, drain the tank as much as possible. Undo the bolts, and lift off the tank. (If youve got enough slack in the supply line, you can do this without disconnecting it... if the supply line is metal... disconnect it first... better to do that than kink a metal line). Replace the gasket, and put the tank back on. Tighten up the bolts....again... not too tight. You want the tank to be stiff in location.. but crank the bolts too tight, and you could crack the bowl or tank.

Good Luck

It sounds to me like you have a really old toilet with a tank that kind of hangs on the wall and a big "L" shaped pipe that connects it to the bowl. I haven't seen one of them in probably 25 years. I think they were outlawed because they use too much water. It is possible to fix one but good luck finding the parts. I'd suggest taking it apart and taking all the pieces, especially the pipe and rubber gaskets, and probably the metal fitting through the ceramic of the bowl to a real plumbing supply house,(this is not a home depot item), and talk to the oldest clerk and see if he knows where to get matching parts. Then it all just screws back together. You may even have to buy special tools to fit the big nuts. Good luck!!!

well actually that toilet is still in use sometimes and you can usually get the parts at most hardware stores. they are not the most common toilet but they are out there. i have repaired many of them. until you can get the right rubber gasket, just unscrew the nut thats leaking and rap some teflon tape on the pipe next to the threads of the bowl, maybe even put some pipe dope on this also it will usually stop the leak. hope this helps.
