Start by "cross multiplying" to get rid of the denominators. Multiply both sides by (x+3) and 5.

5x = 4(x+3)

Then distribute 4 through the parentheses:
5x = 4x + 12

Subtract 4x from both sides:
x = 12

What it's saying is that X over X = the same as 4\5 but plus 3

Ok: x/(x+3)=4/5

1) cross multiply:

5x=4(x+3)

2) distribute:

5x=4x+12

3) solve for x:

x=12.

the urge, i think, is to try to somehow factor x/(x+3); but you can't actually factor it in any way that will simplify the problem.

To solve this first multiply both sides by x+3 to get:

x=4x/5+ 12/5

Then subtract both sides by 4x/5 to get:

x/5 = 12/5

Then Multiply both sides by 5 and get:

x= 12
