Hummm ... well Ms. Judy ... I have never shared this with anyone here. It is something I am extremely proud of to this day, although it is no longer a part of my life.

I am an ex-firefighter. Now mind you this was still back when there weren't many women in the field and men were out to prove you couldn't do the job. My father was a fire capt. in the dept. so not only did I have something to prove to myself ... I couldn't embarrass or let him down (talk about pressure!) It took an extreme amount of courage to pursue my goal while being determined to stay a "woman" if you get my drift.

During one call in particular an engineer went down in a burning building (he wasn't even supposed to be in there in the first place mind you). Not only went down ... but fell in a hole. The capt. on duty was not going to allow me to go in because he felt I wasn't "strong" enough to pull him out and we both could be in danger. That p*ssed me off so much that I acted like I didn't hear him and ran into the house with another male firefighter right behind me.

My engineer was about 6'4" and 225 pounds. For the record I can say that adrenaline works and you really do experience incredible strength in a desperate situation. I reached in and pulled him up - by myself - and the other FF and I dragged him out of the building. I think that capt. would have killed me he was so mad until the other guy stuck up for me. Told him I saved a life and pulled him up by myself. They were all just standing there with their mouths hanging open. Needless to say ... they never doubted me again and even better was the fact that my engineer although he inhaled some smoke and had some minor injuries ... was just fine.

His kids actually came to the station to hug me one day for "saving" their dad. =) Now that was a pretty cool feeling. I have done a few other things I consider brave, but this is one I am most proud of. I taught a bunch of chauvinistic men that day that you cannot underestimate the strength of not only a woman ... but anyone determined to do what is right when it's necessary.

Peace to you ...
