Just once - I'd just finished doing my training to be a midwife, and was moving on to my next job. On my last day at the hospital, I went to my lunch break, and the staff were all in the lunchroom for a "surprise farewell" party for me. I was very touched - they said nice things which really made me feel good. It was a lovely thing for them to do, and I did appreciate it.

Yes, three times in my life so far. A sweet sixteen birthday party, a reception when I returned after getting married in Lake Tahoe, NV and for my 50Th BD. The wedding reception was the best. I was delighted and really surprised about the wedding reception. Not for the 16th BD. The 50th BD party was OK but I was very upset about being 50 so I didn't find much fun nor humor in it. I was very surprised.
I just remembered the best surprise of all. My and my boss's last day at a job. There was an old, old man hobbling up the stairs. I asked staff to help him. No one moved, I asked again. Still no one went to help him. I said, "I'm not thru being your boss yet, you know" and helped the poor old guy upstairs. At the top of the stairs music started and he started stripping!! They had hired a great male stripper to give us a send off. What a great way to end a great job!

Yes, my husband did once when I was around 25. We went
to a couples house before planning to go out together. And
after I sat down at the dining room table, people came out
and said, "Surprise, Happy Birthday". And I was stunned. Also much embarrased when I was given a few practicl joke
gifts. And one of them was a vibrator in the 'embarrassing'
shape we all know. Since I didn't know everyone that well, I
was shocked really at the implication of the item laying out on
top of the wrapping. So I laughed with everyone else and then
wrapped it back up and laid it aside after more dialogue
about it. The wife was a fun loving type and thought she'd get
more of a rise out of me than she did, I think. I opened some
other gifts and then was presented a small decorated cake
and after that we went to the nightclub and had a fun time with
the other couples and danced and drank awhile. I don't remember any particulars about the evening, just that vibrator.
LOL. I remember being teased about it for quite awhile after.

Our boys gave us a surprise 25th anniversary party almost 25 years ago..they took us to dinner at a very nice restaurant, the hostess took us to a table in the back and we keep expecting people to be back there, but dinner was quiet with just the 4 of us. They offered to stop for ice cream on the way home, which we declined..when we opened the front door I saw lights on and the fireplace going in the family room, the thought went through my head that "I didn't start a fire or leave the lights on" but nothing registered until every one said surprise..and we were..

Yes, only once. It was my 30th birthday and the ex had promised to take me on one of our long drives to Pennsylvania; we lived in New Jersey. I wanted an early start and he kept coming up with things he had to do. Towards afternoon I was getting impatient because I just couldn't see why anything he was doing couldn't wait, and I wanted to get going. Finally, he said we had to drop some lawn chairs off at a friend's and then we could go. I was feeling grumpy by then. I must have been there a full 5 minutes before I began to see people I hadn't seen in a long while. When everybody else saw the lightbulb go off over my head, they all yelled "surprise". It certainly was.

That was also the day I learned that horses steal beer.

Once - as is our family tradition, we all go out to dinner to a really nice restaurant and fete the birthday person who is celebrating.

On my 60th, I was told the family was getting together at a local seafood restaurant. Felt nothing amiss whatsoever. My daughter in law called me a week or so before the date to apologize profusely because she said she and my son would not be able to come because unfortunately they had previously agreed to co-host a party in their townhouse cluster of those who had all bought newly one year previously. Though disappointed, I was still not suspicious...and was then expecting no more than 8 family members to be there.

I got the restaurant and was led back to the rear garden room and upon arrival saw over 45 people there...all my family and all my local friends and even 2 old boyfriends!...it was an honest surprise! The kids had gotten together and purchased an all expense trip to the Caribbean for me also. :-)

Only once, for my 50th, I walked in, was surprised that so many of my friends had "shown up" to visit..it didn't dawn on me for a full 10 minutes that this was a surprise party...no "surprise" shouted, just .... well, trust me, I felt like a prime idiot when I finally realize what was going on...that was one surprise party where EVERYONE was surprised! Perhaps the best kind??? Goldwing

I dont like to have surprise parties for me, but I do throw them for others and that is fun. Last April when I turned 50 I told my husband if he did that I would not attend and would just drive away. Just dont like them. Now this year is his 50th and I am already planning for a party in July.

Yes, it was a party of two and I didn't like the other one all that much. I was surprised that they thought I did.

Twice. When I turned 40 and when I turned 60. I was surprised both times.
