I have 5 other kids but none of them talked this early. He looks right at me and says Mom.. not mama, and he does it alot and smiles. And he says blah when daddy says blah to him and he has said what after we have said it to him several times. I am wondering if other 6 months olds are doing this. In all actuality he is 6 months today !

My daughter could make sounds at 6 months, such as mama and dada, but I don't think she was really associating them with anything. She was just babbling. She has just recently started talking and we now know that she knows what she is saying and she is 9 months. I think your son is quite advanced to be able to talk and actually realize what he is saying. Very smart! Just keep talking to him like you have been. By the time he reaches 9 months like my daughter I bet he'll be talking up a storm!

I'd say that's normal, or at least, what should be normal.

Our daughter was saying mama a lot and num-num (breast feeding), then by 10 months was onto dada. But we do lots of sign words that she started using by 2 months. So, now at 11 months, she doesn't feel the need to talk so much because she can convey what she wants with crying to get you to look, then doing some signs or body language. When she does new words, she will go nuts for a few days, then not say it anymore. So, as with our older daughter, they know lots words, but just don't say them. Once they start they never shut up. Our older daughter, first thing she said longer than one word was "I like bug. I like dada." She had never before that said the words 'like' or 'bug'. So, most know more than they let on, is what I'm saying.

There's a funny story I heard from my friend in Japan. A woman was very worried that her 3 year old still doesn't talk yet. He will just point to what he wants etc. and she gets it. She took him to the doctors and explained. The doctors looks at the kid, "So, why don't you talk to your mother, huh?" and he says, "Because I have nothing to say." She was just thrown back by this and terribly surprised and embarrassed. More so when it made it to the news, ha ha...

Wow. That's crazy. My son is 11 months and hasn't said his first word yet. He just started babbling, like saying mamama, dadada or gaga, about a month ago. But he's already been walking since he was 9.5 months. He's very happy and extremely active, but a little slow on the talking thing. I am a teacher with a Master's degree in special education and am also a reading specialist, so I'm not worried right now. My husband and I talk to him in both English and Spanish, so this might be slowing him down a bit. I'm not sure. But I think he's doing great. Sounds like your baby is, too. Congratulations!

Congratulations, Mom - it sounds like you have a language - oriented baby! My son also used words before 6 months (hi at 2 months, followed by bye, mom, dad, and later several more by 7 months). His first word was Hi - clear enough for my sister - in - law, who is a speech pathologist, our pediatrician and a few nurses to hear it without us even mentioning it to them. I'm sure my son isn't the earliest talker in the world, but that's OK. Anyway, keep encouraging his speech. Talk to him and make eye contact like I'm sure you did with your other kids. You may also want to teach him Baby Signs. Do NOT listen to anyone who tells you it will slow his speech down - COMPLETELY untrue! In fact, it will enhance his speech. Ask any speech pathologist, and they'll tell you the same. Since your son sounds strong in language development, it will help him to communicate more complex ideas easier. My son started using signs around 6 months as well. Above all, have fun with him and let him go at his own pace. Keep up the great work!
By the way, while I'm definitely more language - oriented than Hubby, I can't take full credit for the early talking. My husband was observed at a pediatrician's conference when he was 8 months old because he could say things like "I'm good boy!" and "Turn it on" when he wanted to listen to a little radio. I certainly wasn't talking like that at 8 months old!

My 6 month old was saying 3-4 word when he was 6 months. He could say mama and dad, and my mom wants to be called Grandmother, but he said mo-mo... He also said bye bye. Hot was his favorite word, though. He said that a lot. He also would bark like a dog. :) I think every kid is different. Sounds like your is doing just fine. I am glad he is talking at such an early age. When I was 6 months old, my granny handed me a tiny tiny bit of gum. I said 'thank you granny' as plainly as I could and the people around thought it was my sister who was 2. A lot of people do not believe me when I tell them, but my mom and granny and everyone there at church heard me say it and I said it plain as day. I guess that is where my son gets the early talking gene! :)

How cute! That is awesome. Repeating sounds like Blah is common at 6 months, saying mom clearly is not... he is advanced ;) One of my sons first words was "what" around 8 months. I think it was his third word, so that one doesn't surprise me. Congrats ;) Sounds like you have a mini-Einstein on your hands.

I was surprised when my son was the same age and clearly said Hi to me when I was talking to him and he started saying Dada. He didn't really say any other words until later on though.

When my son was 7 months, he was saying several words including "bath time, momma, dadda, wawa, milk, bottle, ball". He talked really early. Now he's a total chatterbox, lol. He's smart - but talkative. Good luck! :)

And I'm sorry but DO NOT teach him sign language. This will discourage his talking. Trust me on this - don't do it.
