Like some of the others have said, it depends. If by 'day job' you mean just something to pay the bills and not actually during the day only then absolutely. An actual day job is perfect for theatre, but not so good for TV and Film. For that you're better off with something more flexible. If your day job is ok with you taking off for auditions then it's all good. If not then you'll have to find something more flexible.

good luck,
Marianne

most people in the acting profession also have day jobs. I knew several actors who waited tables or worked as office temps to bring in regular money while they took classes or auditioned or sometimes performed at night. It's a difficult life that takes a lot out of you but if you love your craft you will do it. The percentage of actors with regular acting jobs is very small. The vast majority of actors are doing it on the side until they get their big break. For some, it never happens and for others it's as easy as having connections, but for most it is a long and difficult road. In answer to you, yes, and please be realistic about it.

a flexible day job that will allow you to go to auditons which are during the day and to take time off to do a film is a must when you get to the point where you are actively seeking work. It is possible to prepare by being in plays and takine classes without missing work. But you have living expenses and acting expenses and work for beginning actors is sporatic at best.

It kind of depends on whether you want to work in a theater or on film. If you want to do stage acting, it's probably doable to have a day job since auditions and rehearsals for stage work often take place in the evening.

If you want film work, including industrials and commercials, you'll need flexible work hours. Auditions usually happen during the day, as does most filming. Visits to the agents also happen during normal business hours. Back when I was acting, most of my actor friends worked for temp agencies if they wanted to work during the day. I had a day job, but with very flexible hours. I couldn't have done any of the acting work I did had I had a full-time day job.

Every acting person out there started that way unless they were the lucky few like the Olsen twins or were Born into an acting family like the Sheens.

Yes.

You must have a job, and an agreement with your boss, that allows you time to audition, and perform. If you have a non-flexible(regarding hours) work schedule, either quit that job or give up acting. The choice is yours to make.

You need to pay rent, BUT, you also need time to act.

It is always preferable to have "F.U." money in the bank.

As long as you can be flexiable with either schedule you should be able to do it.
