Gordon Lightfoot's 1976 ballad "The Wreck Of The Edmund Fitzgerald" is a well done song that honored the famous supertanker ship and its crew of 29 men---all of whom died when the ship sank during a terrible November Great Lakes storm.
Billy Joel's "We Didn't Start The Fire", skirts around pop cultural events between the 1950s to the 1980s.
The Beatles "Elenor Rigby" is a solem homage to a real British young bride who was stood up on her wedding day. The band, "Kansas" made a really good and powerful redo of this rock classic.
FYI : Lynyrd Skynyrd's "The Ballad of Curtis Loew" is NOT one of a real person of influence on Ronnie Van Zant, the band's lead singer.
Neil Young's "Ohio" is one of those politcal protest ballads recounting how during the Nixon Presidency, U.S. military and local police lethal force was authorized to kill innocent UNARMED college students at Kent State, during an anti-Vietnam War protest.

Billy Joel's "We Didn't Start The Fire" is a song about events from 1949 to 1989. It was used in schools to help students understand the time line of the cold war. Great song as well.
"JFK blown away, what else do I have to say!"
He has been quoted as saying that it is a hard song to sing live due to it's list like nature.
