His time is definitely running out. I think he would be better if he had better talent around him (better offensive line, better recievers).
But the real question is, how much better would he be with talent around him? It's not really fair to give up on him because of the talent around him, but he doesn't seem to be improving. Usually you see a quarterback progress however, I don't see that out of him. He just doesn't seem to be getting better.
But then again he's in the NFL, he's not in Utah throwing for 300 yards a game AGAINST WYOMING! I would give him another year to see if he progresses. If he doesn't progress then we should look elsewhere for new QB.

Yes, the 49ers need a better OL and some better receivers, but what it boils down to regarding Alex Smith is that this guy just can't cut it in the NFL. I'm a 49er fan and I don't know if I want to risk (yes, risk) another season, or two, or three to "see" if he can do better. He's had more than enough time to get his sealegs at the helm of the 49ers. His HS and College records are impressive, but he has been horrible with the niners.
Smith needs to be let go, and perhaps spend some time in the arena league or in another league. He's just not performing well, and he has proven that he does not have what it takes to make a difference in the already sorry 49ers offense.

I don't know why all you guys picked the Whiners to win the NFC West. I could have told you from jump street that Alex Smith was over rated. Frank Gore is going to be a flash in the pan type player and there offensive line has never been good. They picked up some decent players on defense but come on, Nate Clements ain't all that. Looks the Niners will have to get used to coming out on the bottom again.

I think the 49er's are stuck with Alex Smith for at least 3 more years. They definitely need an offensive coordinator who's gonna be there for a while, at least give Smith a fighting chance.

That QB class wasn't very strong. I think Alex was good in college because of the spread option he was playing under Myer. He doesn't have a strong arm and I don't see him becoming a starter soon or even into next year. I think they are keeping him in there because of the money and not wanting to be scrutinized for the #1 pick.

I was about to write this Q down...but you beat me...All I can say is that I am afraid A Smith has been a disappointment. What a shame, every Niner fan thought they were about to rise. Nonetheless, we gotta give credit to Smith since he has not been given some support at the running game, OL and defense. Plus, his QB coaches have changed every year.

I certainly agree with you. I picked San Francisco to win the NFC West this year, but this team is just terrible for some reason. I think this team was overrated coming into this year, because with all the new players and coaches, it takes a while to get acustom to them. Alot of 49er fans I knows said they counted their chickens before the hatched, and that is absolutly correct. I feel bad for San Francisco, because Frank Gore is one touch running back. Cheers!

It's not quite time to give up on him, but it is safe to say he is running out of time. Keep improving and give him another year, and see what happens.
