Even though I don't agree, some people have argued that consensual incest between two adults where no children are produced should not be looked down upon...that the "taboo" nature of such a relationship is due more to religious/conservative attitudes.
However, if activists tried to lobby governments to legalize such relationships, do you think in time incest will be considered "the norm" by society? For example, do you think a brother and sister in a sexual relationship deserve the same legal status as a married couple?

Just so that there's no misunderstanding: I think incest is morally wrong and would never condone it.
However, I'm asking this question because I've encountered people who don't think it's wrong and I'm just curious to know what others think.

OK. Let's say Congress legalizes incestual relationships with adults. It would not become the 'norm' for at least 90-95% of the nation who believes in God (Christians, Jews and Muslims). And given these statistics it obviously would never happen. Since gays aren't given the same legal status as a married couple (almost everywhere), neither would siblings.
No birth control method is 100% reliable - accidents happen. Children born of this type of relationship have at least a 50% greater chance of being born with a birth defect.
Another consideration. I strongly feel that in any incestual relationship no matter the age, that the weaker person is co-erced by the other into having sex by seduction if not violence. It is an extrodinarily selfish act by a person who is so self-indulgent that they can't see (or won't see) the long-term psychological damage done to the other person.

Interesting question. But is there really a grassroots movement of brother-sister or father-daughter or mother-son incestuous couples lobbying for legalization of their sexual relationships? I mean, is this really a serious issue?? If so, I've never heard of it. Or is this just a variation on the "slippery slope" arguments so favored by the anti-gay-marriage crowd -- "if we let 2 men or 2 women marry, next thing ya know, some guy will be wanting to marry his sheep......or his 13-year-old neighbor.....or his sister!!" Is that the point you're trying to make here? The point of civil marriage is to create a legally recognized next-of-kin family relationship between 2 people who would otherwise be legal strangers to each other, so that they can take care of each other "in sickness and in health, for richer and for poorer", etc, etc. A brother and sister are ALREADY legally recognized next-of-kin. A father and daughter are ALREADY legally recognized next-of-kin. A mother and son are ALREADY legally recognized next-of-kin. What more do you think they should have?

I live in Hawaii and when I applied for my marriage license I read somethings that surprised me... in Hawaii it is legal for 2ND cousins to marry. I am guessing that Hawaii isn't the only state.
I don't think it should be legal because of the affect it could have on their future children... you are looking at a high possibility of major birth defects.

That will never be legal because the only way to prevent pregnancy 100% is to surgically remove the reproductive organs, so in order to bag your brother you'd have to get a hysterectomy. Illogical. Besides, don't you think that we have bigger problems to worry about that whether or not people are allowed to have sex with their family members?

I hope not. I don't believe in the saying "Incest is the best put your sister to the test"!

You know, there have been societies where that was okay. I think it will take ours several thousand years to reach that point.

No, incestuous relationships have issues far beyond what you have mentioned...there are genetic issues involved too.
