Let's be realistic ... Through which opening can you exhale faster, your nose or your mouth? Although some air may leave through your nose, you should forcefully exhale through your mouth. You simply don't have time, especially while racing and breathing every stroke cycle (that's one left and one right arm) to exhale through your nose.
Of course, you never inhale through your nose as evidenced by people (even world class swimmers) who are at the top of the spot

Normally, you are supposed to exhale through the nose and inhale through the mouth especially when doing crawl

Exhale thru your nose. It will prevent the water from going inside your nose.

you should exhale wth your nose so the water doesn't get in your mousth and choke you. Mainly I fyou find it more comfortable doing it hte other way round that is fine too.
