Let area to be covered = X units²
Painter A rate of work = X / 4 units² / h
Painter B rate of work = X / 6 units² / h
Combined rate of work = 3X/12 + 2X/12 units²/h
= 5X/12 units² / h
time = area / rate
time = X / (5X/12) h = 12/5 h = 2 2/5 h = 2 h 24 min

First, find the number of houses each paints per hour. Painter 1: 1 house / 4 hours = 0.25 houses/hour Painter 2: 1 house / 6 house = 1/6 houses/hour Painter 1 + Painter 2 = 5/12 houses/hour. 1 house / (5 houses/12 hours) = 2.4 hours.

Why the hell would they take 5 hours to paint a house if one of them can do it in 4 hours? I don't know the answer to this problem but it's definitely not 5 hours.

O well, I think it's 2 hours.

(1/3)+(1/6)=(1/2)......reciprocal of that is 2. I could be wrong but at least it sounds right.
