Colin Powell claimed to have documentation proving that Iraq had WMDs. This is true, the documentation was just forged (tiny problem). Iraq had nothing to do with 9/11, it's just in the Middle East and could be a haven for terrorists, so Bush turned the War on Terror toward Iraq.

Iraqis didn't have much to do with 9-11 as far as I know.
The official reason for invading Iraq was to find weapons of mass destruction. Some unofficial reasons were the treaties from the 1st gulf war that hussein was violating for a decade, and his lack of cooperation with our inspectors. He was a dangerous guy, and now he's not.

The Iraq Government and Saddam Hussein had nothing to do with 9/11 and Bush knew this. He just used the event to attack Iraq and depose Saddam with whom the Bush Administrations had done business for years. Various American administrations had provided weapons to support Iraq in their war with Iran. People have short memories.

It's a religious war that has been going on for centuries, which reached the American doorstep, most prominently on 9/11. They feel that they live in the "holy land", and we have no business there, since we do not worship/practice their religious beliefs. Bush declared war against them as a counter-terrorist action, after they acted on their threats to kill those who do not believe as they do. He also initiated new rules & regulations in several areas of our daily lives (airport security policies, for example) in order to stabilize homeland security.
I don't know if we (American citizens) will ever know to the fullest extent, what exactly occurred prior to, or after the bombings.
I do find it interesting that our country, as a whole, was all for war and retaliation immediately following 9/11, and everyone wanted us to go in and cripple the country that threatened us, and who killed so many innocent Americans....to hunt down and kill Saddam Hussein....and to find Osama Bin Laden... but now, the same people are so reluctant to admit that we have to stay and help rebuild the country that we crippled, took away it's leader, in attempt to stabilize it....for our own economy, for our own safety, and for the sake of all other countries in the UN, who are also there, attempting to keep terrorism at bay, and off of our soil.

Misguided leadership is what caused us to go to 'war' with Iraq. The Bush family had a personal vendetta against Saddam Hussein since the days of Desert Storm when George H.W. Bush was ridiculed, criticized and humiliated for not 'finishing the job' and ousting Hussein at that time;
Cheney coveted all that OIL swimming underneath Iraq's sands, and now one of the Bush administration's primary non-military 'benchmarks' is to force the Iraqi Parliament to surrender two-thirds of Iraq's OIL fields to private, foreign oil corporations. In effect, this virtually allows corporations like Exxon-Mobil and others to STEAL Iraq's most valuable economic resource;
The giant U.S. military-industrial complex [which Dwight Eisenhower warned us about] needed a new 'war' to boost sagging profits from too many years of peace.

So, Bush, Cheney and their war-mongering friends lied to Congress, hoodwinked the American people and conned our courageous U.S. soldiers into believing there was honorable purpose in an unconstitutional, illegal, immoral attack on another sovereign nation that in no way threatened, provoked or attacked the United States.

Surely there's a special oil-soaked, blood-stained corner of Hell reserved for Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld and

-AND-
535 members of the most arrogant, incompetent, wicked, contemptible, cowardly, corrupt Democratic-led Congress in U.S. history that promised to end this vile 'war' if elected, and - to date - has done absolutely nothing to keep that promise.
