I have just purchased my first house, and I am single. Am I able to purchase a gun for safety? If so, where can I go to purchase and how much for one?

that would depend on your age and history(think they do background checks)...there's also a waiting period..

as for purchasing it...there should be a gun store that you can go to in your area...the price would also depend on what kind of gun you would want to purchase

oh and almost forgot...you'd have to get a permit for it

Yes, you can own a gun, if you live in the US (at least for now). Find a gun store and tell them what you're looking for, as in a gun for protection. They may be able to recommend a weapon and a range for you to practice since you'll want to be comfortable with it. They do the back ground check there, depending on your state laws.

You should also look into a gun safe. If you would like to carry your gun concealed (which is the safest way to carry since you won't scare people with it or be confronted over it) you should see your local police or sheriff's office. You'll have to go through whatever procedure they require for you to obtain a concealed weapon's permit. You usually have to take a class which will teach the basics in shooting, law and safety. This will also help you feel more confident.

The price depends on what you want, a handgun, rifle, shotgun, etc. My husband (police officer) recommended a shot gun for me for when he was away because you don't really have to aim, just point and shoot. Good for when you're scared and shaky (which I've been before only I used a revolver that time) . Plus, just the sound of that shotgun rack can be scarey. Makes a big boom and gets the job done.

You'll have to shop around though. Good luck.

Each state has their own laws in place in addition to the federal laws over handgun purchases. Your best bet is to simply visit a local gun store and they will help you through the purchase process for where you live.

Amount of paperwork depends on your location and if you want a handgun or long gun.

Oh, since you're obviously a lady, if you don't get a good vibe from the first store you go to, go to another with your money and your business. Most of the dealers treat women with respect but there are a few out there who are still very condescending, pass!

I'd suggest investing in some gun safety/training classes so you know how to properly use a gun. Safety first when it comes to having a gun in the house. You'll need to get a permit (they run a background check/criminal record check) and then you can purchase a gun.
Also, consider getting a "defense gun" which shoots hard pellets or rubber bullets because that will make an intruder go away just as fast as a regular gun- plus it is a lot safer since you don't know much about guns.

The gun laws vary WIDELY from state to state. But if you are at all unfamiliar with guns, your best bet is not to get one. If you must, the gentleman who recommended the shotgun is correct-the last thing an intruder wants to hear at 2 in the morning is the CHIC-CLOC of a twelve gauge round being chambered. If you get one (usually $120 and up) make sure you find a range where someone can teach you how to use it.

You need to carefully examine the laws of your area before going further. Permit requirements vary by state (YOU MAY NOT NEED ONE!) and you need to be 21 to own a handgun in any state.

You also need to look at whether you are willing to use this weapon to kill an intruder. If you're going to choke and get it taken away from you...bad deal.

Suggestion: Buy a SHOTGUN rather than a handgun. Less chance of wall penetration, and you pretty much whack whatever you're aiming at. Take out the plug and put as many shells as you can get in there. If you can't take Chester the Molester out with 4-5 shotgun blasts, he's the Terminator anyway. Shotguns are usually fairly cheap, as opposed to a good handgun (with which you WILL miss if you don't train often).

No. YOU cannot have a gun. I don't care how fun it might seem (I know, I own several), if you are on Yahoo Answers asking this question, then you cannot have one. I have forwarded this question on to a higher court (yes, Charleston Heston) and even he said so too.

EDIT: I just reade the other answers and realized I better answer this truthfully. For home protection, get a PUMP ACTION SHOTGUN. Not a rifle, not a handgun, not an automatic shotgun. It does not have to be expensive - it's not for hitting a quail in flight, nor is it for lugging around on a camping trip. It is so at 2:30 am when you are awakened from a sound sleep, you can chamber a round (VERY loud sound in the middle of the night - one that will result in most burglars diving out the nearest window) and yell "I HAVE A GUN. GET OUT OF MY HOUSE." You don't actually want to have to live with having killed someone - you want them to **** their pants and run away.
BTW - If you get a large dog, you're more likely to lose the battle in court. You or your agent (dog) are allowed to inflict harm on anybody who has an immediate threat to you. If you are at the movies and your dog bites a burglar, your agent (dog) has inflicted harm on someone who had zero chance to inflict harm on you - you lose the lawsuit.
Also - a shotgun blast that misses the intruder won't go through a bunch of walls and kill your kid or neighbor. A handgun round might. Also, at 2:30am you might hit someone with a shotgun blast. You will not hit them with a handgun round.

I have to agree with David. If you want to get a gun for home defense I would get a shotgun. Probably a 12 gauge pump. You should be able to pick one up for around 200 bucks depending on what you like.

Through? I think you meant "thorough" Background checks are conducted at gun shows and licensed gun dealers. Anyway, I do not want the government to know any more about me than they already do. What firearms I have is no of their damn business.

Here is a good website to start with:
Spwengers defensive use of firearms:

I would also use the Internet to check your state and local gun laws.

And invest in some gun training as well.
